A Brahmin lived in the city of Patiala. One day he went to the king to beg. The king gave a hundred rupees to a Brahmin in begging. But the Brahmin refused to take it. He said to the king, "I don't want a hundred rupees. If you want, give me one penny, but give me something you have earned with your hard work."
The king was very surprised. There was nothing that the king himself did. The king asked the Brahmin to come two days later.
The next day the king got up early, took off his political robes and put on old and torn clothes and went to a nearby village. There he saw some laborers building a road. There the king asked the chief of the laborers to take some work.
The chief asked the king, "What can you do?" Can you dig the soil?
"Yes," said the king.
"Okay, pick it up and dig up some dirt."
The king began to dig.
But soon he got tired and got blisters on his hands.
The chief, seeing the king's condition, said, "Looks like you won't be able to dig any more soil. So take this coin and go away. ”The king picked up the coin and walked towards the palace.
The next day the king came to the court in his royal attire. He had the same coin of yesterday in his pocket. After a while a Brahmin came and begged. The king took a coin out of his pocket. Giving it to the Brahmin, he said, "I have earned it with my hard work."
Do you know what a Brahmin did? He buried the coin in the backyard of his house, under a basil tree near a well. Soon a tree was loaded with coins from that coin.
One day when the soldiers went out of the palace to get flowers for worship, they saw a tree with a coin.
The soldiers informed the king, "Your Majesty, your garden is nothing. There is a tree in the backyard of a Brahmin's house which is laden with shining silver coins."
The king ordered his army to go and uproot the tree.
But uprooting, the distant Brahmin did not allow anyone to touch it.
He said, “If the king wants to, he must come and take the tree himself.
When the king came, the Brahmin asked, "King, do you remember what you gave me?" Only one rupee. But you earned it with your hard work, it doubled day and quadrupled night. Remember that you gave me only one coin. If you are happy to receive your gift, you can go. ”
The king was very embarrassed and went back to his palace.
